This week, one of the trainees studying to be a teacher took a special lesson with Room 22. We learned that the volume of water doesn't change, even though it might look like it does in different-sized jars! In our groups, we filled the jars with different amounts of water and tapped them with a spoon to listen to the sounds. We concluded that the more water there was in a jar, the higher pitched the noise was.

Term 2 Week 2: Auckland Zoo Trip
This year, our inquiry theme is Survival. The Year 5s will be looking at animal adaptation, and how the physical appearance and behaviours of animals help them survive in their habitats. We were fortunate enough to have our zoo educators teach us about how giraffes and meerkats have adapted to the wild. For example, giraffes have long snouts so that their eyes don't get poked by branches as they eat. Meerkats also have dark rings around their eyes to stop them from being blinded by the sun's glare in the desert. Overall, we had a fabulous time!

Term 2 Week 1
For Mother's Day, Room 22 made some cards for a very special adult in our lives. To help us think about how they have helped us "grow", we watched a video about how caterpillars metamorphose into butterflies. Did you know that caterpillars completely liquify themselves in their chrysalides? Titiro mai, we're working hard!

Term 1 Week 9: Water Safety
On Tuesday, our swimming session at Lloyd Elsmore Pools was around water safety. In a country like New Zealand where we're surrounded by water, it's really important to know what to do in case of a boating or water emergency. Some of the important skills we learned were:
- Checking whether a life jacket fits.
- Entering the pool with a life jacket: hold our nose, pull our knees up and lie back into the water.
- Floating on our backs in a life jacket.
- Huddle for warmth: if we stick together in an emergency we can stay afloat, and help each other stay warm.

Term 1 Week 7 Room 22's Swimming Lesson
On Monday Room 22 went to Lloyd Elsmore Pools for our second community swim lesson. We learned about using different arm strokes, floating and using proper technique when kicking. We are gaining a lot of confidence, so have a look at what each group was doing!
